Notes from conversation with Dick Gattinger: - I overestimated the SNR available with an intensifier - intensifiers help if you're worried about readout noise, but you lose a factor of 5 signal right off the bat since the photocathode QE is only 0.1 instead of 0.5 - EEV make 1" CCDs with big (22u) pixels, so the optics can be opened up - if the payload can be despun to 1 rpm we can reduce the horizontal field of view to (say) 15 deg: optics are simpler and can be opened further, helping SNR - need to know (or model) pendulum-type oscillations: if they're not too bad we can reduce the vertical fov and further gain signal - include fairly detailed description of possible satellite follow-on: platform stability, orbit, possibilities for tropospheric ozone - Dick can send the WINDII star catalog (~15K stars down to M=9) if necessary
