ftp.aol.com:/pub/compress/ibmpc/readme.txt The "gzip124.zip" archive contains a program to "unzip" Lempel-Ziv compressed files. These kind of files are usually indicated with the ".Z" or ".gz" extension on Internet FTP hosts. It requires the newer version of the "unzip.exe", which is included in this same directory. Both of these files are uploaded from the SimTel archives at oak.oakland.edu. Original paths were: /SimTel/msdos/UNZIP.EXE /SimTel/msdos/compress/gzip124.zip You may also pull these files directly from the source if you so wish. After extracting the archive, you need to rename (or copy) the "gzip.exe" to "gunzip.exe". After this has been done, files with a ".z" or ".gz" extension can be dragged and dropped on the "gunzip" program and uncompressed. Word of caution: text file downloaded in a compressed format from Unix systems will probably end lines with a bare newline. DOS expects a return-newline 2 character combination. This translation is done automatically by AOL's FTP (it's the reason why file sizes go over 100%), but not when you download a compressed image. If you "more" one of these files from DOS, you will see each line advances down the screen, but does not return to the left margin. Use an editor to rewrite the file(s) in a DOS friendly manner.
