Memorandum Date: November 4, 1996 To: Wayne Eyre, Editor, On Campus News From: Dr. David P. Steele Re: NITEOWL soars! Dear Wayne: I am pleased with the cover story on NITEOWL that appeared last Friday in On Campus News. However, I would like to give credit where credit is due. Contrary to the photograph caption, it is the entire NITEOWL team, with the graduate students in the fore, who are preparing the proposal for the Canadian Space Agency. The team comprises (in alphabetical order by department) Dr. Henry Caplan, Matthias Huber, Dr. Sasha Koustov, Dr. Ted Llewellyn, Dan Lowe, Eugene McDougall, Jay Offiong, Dr. Andrei Smolyakov, Dr. David Steele, and Megan White of the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics, Dr. Ron Bolton, James Giesbrecht, Myles Stocki, and Dr. Hugh Wood of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Dr. Jim Bugg, Dr. Allan Dolovich, and John Steele of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Chris Soteros and Dr. Raj Srinivasan of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and Jacky Chan and Dave Harris of the College of Commerce MBA program. Sasha Koustov, Ted Llewellyn and I are members of the Institute of Space and Atmospheric Studies, and Matthias Huber, Eugene McDougall, Jay Offiong and Megan White are studying with Institute professors. The Institute has for nearly four decades been a leading Canadian center for space science, and many who received their graduate training here have become leaders internationally in both science and industry. Finally, the Canadian Space Agency's Small Payloads Program exists in part because of the encouragement and guidance provided to the CSA's Space Science Program by the Solar Terrestrial Relations Advisory Committee, of which the Institute chair, Dr. Alan Manson, is a member. Thank you for the opportunity to recognize these important contributors to the proposal. With best regards, I am Yours sincerely, David P. Steele, Ph.D.
